The School of Mathematics & Science offers degree and certificates programs in the following areas:


Early Childhood Development AAS

The two-year degree program in Early Childhood Development is designed to prepare students with skills and theoretical knowledge related to the care, supervision, education and development of young children from birth to age twelve. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students will be prepared to seek employment in a variety of positions in the childcare field.




Early Childhood Development C

The one-year certificate program in Early Childhood Development is designed to prepare students with skills related to the care, supervision, education and development of young children from birth to age eight. There is also the ability to become qualified to work with children up to the age of twelve in programs which serve before and after school and recreational programs.




Early Childhood Education CSC

The program is designed to provide students with the additional early childhood skills needed in the care and development of young children in a variety of child care settings. The program provides training appropriate for persons presently working in the field who wish to continue to upgrade their knowledge and skills in child development and care. The program also offers a well-organized course of study for parents who wish to increase their understanding of child development.



Early Childhood Education - Advanced CSC

The program is designed to provide students with the additional early childhood skills needed in the care and development of young children in a variety of child care settings. The program provides training appropriate for persons presently working in the field who wish to continue to upgrade their knowledge and skills in child development and care. The program also offers a well-organized course of study for parents who wish to increase their understanding of child development.



Early Childhood - School-Age Child Care CSC
This career studies certificate is designed to train students who want to work with school-age children, ages 6-12, in before and after-school programs. The curriculum also offers an organized course of study for those who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of child development.



Human Services AAS
(formerly Community and Social Services,
Plan Code 176)

This career studies certificate is designed to train students who want to work with school-age children, ages 6-12, in before and after-school programs. The curriculum also offers an organized course of study for those who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of child development.



Paraprofessional Education AAS
The two-year degree program in Paraprofessional Education is designed to provide students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge related to assisting instruction in a variety of K-12 school settings.  Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students will be prepared to seek employment in a school division as a paraprofessional.

The associate of science degree with a major in Science is designed for persons who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university in a major which requires a background in the natural or physical sciences, computer science and mathematics. With the many advances taking place in all areas of science, the opportunities for persons with expertise in this area are rapidly increasing. This program provides the necessary training for transfer into a broad range of scientific fields ranging from cytology  to ecology, and from chemistry to geology, or physics. In addition, the Science major is designed to meet the requirements for admission to a professional school or upper-division major for career preparation in many of the medical professions including nursing, pharmacy, medicine, and veterinary medicine.



Substance Abuse Counseling Education CSC

The Human Services program offers a career studies certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling Education designed to prepare students with the requisite professional knowledge, intervention skills, and values for delivering services in substance abuse counseling programs and addictions treatment. Courses in this curriculum can be used to meet the certification requirements of substance abuse counselors and substance abuse counseling assistants designated by the Health Professions Board of Counseling in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
