Student Lingo
Student Lingo is a free resource available to all Reynolds students providing online workshops on a variety of success topics. These fun and engaging workshops are given by college professionals and last 20-30 minutes.   You can watch these sessions from any computer and at any time of the day or night – it’s available 24/7!


Prepare for the VPT English Placement Test:

The English placement test has two sections:  a written essay and 40 multiple choice questions.  The multiple choice questions cover topics such as reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and research skills.  The English placement test is untimed.  

Students can utilize sites such as Grammar Bytes and Towson's Online Writing Support to prepare for the English placement test.   For videos and lessons covering reading and vocabulary, click here.  

Here are some other tips to help you get ready to test.  

Prepare for the VPT Math Placement Test

The math placement test is untimed.  The only calculator you can use is the one within the test program.  

To review operations with whole numbers, operations with positive fractions, operations with positive decimals and percents and algebra basics, use this VCCS resource.  

Students also utilize sites such as Purple Math and Open Algebra to prepare for the math placement test.  

The VPT Math placement test will cover topics from the courses MTE 1-9.  

 Practice Test:  Students can take a practice test to better understand the format of the test and identify areas for improvement.  Go to and select student self-registration at the bottom of the page.  Follow these steps:

  • Select VCCS Practice Test Institution from the institution drop down box
  • Select VCCS Practice Test
  • Enter "Virginiapt" as the password
  • Fill in all required fields that have a red asterick
  • Click submit and follow the remaining instructions

You can also pick up a set of instructions by e-mailing one of them or stopping in at one of the Centers.  

Math Central+

Math Central+ at Reynolds provides coaching and support for math students. Qualified faculty and peer math coaches offer a variety of techniques to support students through developmental and credit-level math courses.  Prospective students can use Math Central+ for help in preparing for the placement test.  It is recommended that prospective students take the practice math test first and bring the results to Math Central+.  See the Math Central+ website for hours and locations.
