Montgomery GI Bill

Chapter 30, Active Duty, Selective Reserve Chapter 1606 & Reserve Educational Assistance (REAP) Chapter 1607

  • Individuals must apply by completing “Application for Dependents' Educational Assistance."
  • Complete must be submitted each semester.

Benefit Stipend

  • The monthly stipend is paid on or after the first of the month following the month for which payment is due. The stipend is issued by the Dept of VA in check form and will be mailed directly to the student. Direct deposit is not available with this benefit.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Veteran Advisor concerning his/her continued enrollment by completing Request for Certification Form each semester. Failure to submit this form will cause the payment cycle to be broken.

Transferring VA benefits from another school to J. Sargeant Reynolds:
Transfer your educational benefits to J. Sargeant Reynolds by completing:

  • Request for Change of Program or Place of Training.
  • Submit Request for Certification Form
  • Submit Copy of COE (Certificate of Eligibility).
  • Submit all these documents to the Veterans Advisor (Certifying Official).

Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (formerly Virginia War Orphans Education Program)
Students receiving this benefit may also qualify for Chapter 35. This program is available to spouses and children of military service members killed, missing in action, taken prisoner, or who became at least 90 percent disabled as a result of military service in an armed conflict. For more information, click here or call Doris Sullivan (Doris.Sullivan@dvs.virginia.gov), 540-561-6625 to determine if you qualify. Student must apply to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services first. Once the student has been approved, have the Department of Veteran Services fax (804-523-6405) the authorization letter to the Veteran Advisor. The Veteran Advisor will then contact the student to have a financial hold placed on the student’s account.

Additional Information:
The Department of Veterans Affairs will pay retroactively up to one year. To receive retroactive pay for past semester, please print and complete the Request for Certification Form to the Veteran Advisor (Certifying Official).
