TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Full-time classified position with state benefits.
DUTIES: The Ground Maintenance Technician maintains a variety of grounds/landscape areas to provide an aesthetically appealing campus for the community, staff, students, and the general public on the Goochland Campus. Grounds maintenance duties include: hard surface cleaning such as sidewalks and parking lots, emptying exterior trash and ash cans, cutting grass, clearing leaves and debris from landscape, planting trees, flowers, and shrubs; and, snow removal as needed. Additionally, this position will perform grounds maintenance responsibilities in the absence of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, and has college-wide responsibilities and may be assigned to any of the college's locations. This position is considered "essential personnel" and a first responder for inclement weather/emergency conditions; and, may work flexible hours depending upon assignment.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Considerable working knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques and practices. Working knowledge of plant materials, diseases, feeding and pruning; and the ability to operate and maintain a variety of grounds equipment (i.e., riding mowers, trimmers, tractors, trucks, chain saws, and other power tools). Knowledge of and ability to apply proper safety techniques used in day-to-day grounds maintenance operations. Demonstrated ability to design and implement work plans and lead the work of others; and the ability to communicate and work effectively with multi-cultural populations. Ability to lift and move heavy objects and tolerate contact with a variety of chemicals (i.e., pesticides and insecticides). Registered Technician License or the ability to obtain within nine (9) months of hire is required. Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain within one year is required. High school diploma or equivalent; and/or recent related training such as in the preventative maintenance of vehicles and grounds equipment (manual and power), and small engine repair.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED: Current Category III, A & B, and VI Spray License or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Current and advanced-level work experience in grounds maintenance of a campus or similar setting is preferred. Erosion Control Certificate is preferred. Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License is also preferred.
PAY BAND: 3
STARTING SALARY: Maximum starting salary, $41,500. Based on related experience.
