What is HyFlex?

HyFlex courses offer students the choice of meeting at specified days and times in-person on campus, or synchronously via Zoom, or asynchronously by participating and completing all coursework and assignments online in Canvas. Students may switch between these three attendance options throughout the semester.

What are students saying about HyFlex?

Students have had positive feedback. They don’t have to explain to the instructor why they missed class or chose the modality they did each week. There is a module in Canvas that they can do in order to meet the objectives. Check out our HyFlex Testimonials page to hear from Reynolds students (and faculty) how HyFlex has benefited them.

Is the HyFlex classroom technology difficult to learn?

It is not. Reynolds has great training as well as checklists and user guides. All our HyFlex guides can be found on our HyFlex Resources page . The Help Desk is also a great resource: 655555 (on-campus phone) or 804-523-5555 (off-campus phone).

What is the downside?

It is important to start with a well-designed online asynchronous course, so instructors should be qualified to teach online. It can be difficult to teach face-to-face and in Zoom at the same time. Engaging students in both modalities and keeping up with the chat function can be a challenge. Instructors have to be flexible. If the weather is horrible, students might not come in and everyone will be on Zoom.

What if I can’t attend any of the upcoming HyFlex workshops?

No problem. Feel free to request a 1:1 consultation with CETL and a team member will work with you to schedule a personalized workshop.

Do the learning activities in the synchronous modality have to be the same as the asynchronous modality?

The learning activities do not have to be the same as long as the learners are meeting the objectives. Best practice is to start with a really good asynchronous course. You could, for example, have the synchronous learners work on a Google Doc, or similar collaborative tool, and the asynchronous learners add to it (the same learning activity). You could have everyone watch the same video. The synchronous learners might discuss it in class while the asynchronous learners use the discussion board (different learning activity). The pace of the class should be the same because learners might participate asynchronously one week and synchronously the next week.

What if a student wants to just participate asynchronously?

It does happen, but it isn’t the intent of HyFlex. It could happen that a student intends to attend, but gets a job that interferes with attendance, for example. The student would be able to complete the class asynchronously. A student who intends, from the start, to complete the class asynchronously should register for an Online Asynchronous (OA) section.

How do students know what the expectation is?

Expectations should be clear in the syllabus and in the weekly course module. Some instructors have different pages in Canvas: one for “If you are coming to class in person or in Zoom” and another for “If you are completing this week’s module asynchronously in Canvas”. Some instructors have a chart in the syllabus that shows exactly what the expectation is and how points are earned.

How does the instructor keep track of students in three different modalities and what about attendance reporting?

Instructors do need to keep track of attendance. You could keep a spreadsheet that shows how the student attended, but that is not necessary. As long as the student attends in person, in Zoom or participates asynchronously (by submitting an assignment or discussion board post) they have attended.

How do I invite my online students in Zoom to participate synchronously in the HyFlex classroom with my face-to-face students?

The critical piece is to connect the HyFlex classroom via the Crestron touchpad to your scheduled Zoom meeting in Canvas. The simple and manual way is to locate and click the ‘JOIN’ button on the Crestron, then enter your Zoom meeting ID and passcode (if applicable), every class.

Is there a way to simplify the process of joining my scheduled Zoom classroom from the Crestron, rather than having to enter my meeting ID manually every class?

Yes! Glad you asked. We also have guides for that. Check out our Invite HyFlex Classroom to Zoom Meeting guide ( Outlook App or Microsoft 365), or video tutorial

I am teaching a non-HyFlex course but was assigned a HyFlex classroom. How do I share presentation aides or other media from the instructor machine to the classroom projector?

We have a guide for that! Check out our HyFlex Classroom: Projector & Document Camera guide .

What do I do if the instructor machine doesn’t turn on?

Please contact the Help Desk, 655555 (on-campus phone) or 804-523-5555 (off-campus phone) and a technician will come out to assist.

What do I do if the camera/s in the HyFlex classroom aren’t turning on or responding correctly?

Please contact the Help Desk, 655555 (on-campus phone) or 804-523-5555 (off-campus phone) and a technician will come out to assist.

There is no audio when I play back a video or audio clip in the classroom, or we can hear the audio in the classroom but the online students in Zoom cannot. How do I fix it?

Check the volume slider on the Crestron touchpad, use Zoom Share Screen to project media, and ensure 'SHARE SOUND' is checked when using Zoom Share Screen to fix audio issues.

How do I fix the audio echo or feedback I am hearing in the classroom when I play back a video or audio clip?

To eliminate audio echo or feedback, mute the system audio on the instructor machine or laptop (the device from which the media is being played from) and ensure the microphone on the Zoom toolbar is muted while the classroom microphone (Crestron touchpad) is unmated.

Okay, I'm interested in learning more, what should I do now?

Attend one of CETL's upcoming HyFlex workshops, or  request a 1:1 consultation to schedule a personalized workshop, or seek additional information and guidance. If you're interested in teaching HyFlex, reach out to your Program Head or Dean to learn about the next steps.
