We are committed to using all of the available funds to help you gain access to a college education. In fact, more than 91% of our students graduate without any educational debt. Additional Program Information

PURPOSE: This curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for employment in the automotive repair industry as an entry-level technician. Students will be trained in automotive diagnostic and repair procedures consistent with current industry trends.

PROGRAM NOTES: The General Automotive Program provides theory and practice on modern vehicles, but does not specialize in any specific brand. This program encompasses a Career Studies Certificate (Maintenance and Light Repair) and a Certificate (Automotive Technology), which lead to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. An internship component will be required in the first year to complete the AAS. degree. Students who successfully complete the Associate of Applied Science degree will have potentially two years of practical experience and industry certifications through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Graduates of the Automotive Technology AAS degree will be prepared to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exams (A1 - A8). This degree, along with the ASE Credentials, can provide opportunities to become a Master Technician, Shop Foreman, Service Manager, Parts Manager, or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)-based Field Service Representative. Students who are interested in owning a repair shop may also benefit from this degree. The industry credentials earned through this degree are nationally recognized.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the general college admission requirements, the following are required prior to admission into the program:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, SDV 101 - Orientation to Automotive Careers course. Students who are interested in this program, but are not ready to commit, can self-enroll in the SDV 101 - Orientation to Automotive Careers course. This course is required and also satisfies the college’s SDV 100 requirement.
  • Able to fulfill all hiring requirements at a service and repair facility.
  • The General Automotive program is a semi-selective entry process. Students currently working in the field of automotive repair will have priority seating.
  • Students are required to meet with the program head before registering for their first semester.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: A mandatory internship component in the first year ensures real-world application of skills, offering valuable practical experience. Graduates boast potentially two years of practical experience and industry certifications through ASE.

SELECTIVE ENTRY AND MENTORSHIP: The program offers selective entry, prioritizing students working in the automotive repair field. Benefit from mentorship opportunities with dealer technicians, providing invaluable insights and guidance.

COMPUTER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT: Students in this program will meet the college’s computer competency requirement by successfully completing the SDV 101 - Orientation to Automotive Careers and AUT 101 - Introduction to Automotive Service courses.

ACCREDITATION: This program is accredited through the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation and all instructors are ASE Certified Master technicians with advanced-level certifications.
